The Role of the UCSD Mentor
- To learn about the students, the classroom, the school, and the surrounding community;
- To observe and discuss with the cooperating teacher the classroom teaching and learning activities, and to participate in those activities by working with individual or small groups of students;
- To assist with instruction, under teacher direction, to small groups of students; and
- To develop a relationship with assigned mentees, their teachers, and family, while spending a minimum of 40 hours with their mentees during the quarter
The Role of the Host Teacher
- To provide the mentor with basic information about the students, the classroom, the school site, and the community;
- As appropriate, to provide lesson plans which allow the mentor to work with small groups of children;
- To facilitate opportunities for the mentor to complete required course assignments
- To maintain regular communication with the mentor through informal talks at school, on the telephone, or via email; and
- To sign a log sheet for the mentor at the end of each school visit.
The Role of the UCSD Instructor and Teaching Assistants
- To provide the UCSD mentors with class sessions, readings and assignments that support the mentors' work and thinking about education;
- To monitor mentors through weekly journals and regular meetings;
- To address questions and concerns of mentors and host teachers.
